San Antonio
The province of San Antonio is located on the southwest side of the region of Valparaiso. With a population of almost 170,000 inhabitants, its capital is the port city of San Antonio. The province is framed by the Andes and the Pacific Ocean and has a Mediterranean climate. The fishing port of San Antonio is one of the most important commercial centres of the province thanks to the economic activity it generates in trade activity and fishing work.
The San Antonio Valley is a wine valley that includes the province of the same name and in it is located the Leyda Valley area that corresponds to the municipalities of San Antonio and Santo Domingo.
HISTORY OF WINE
The first vine plantations in the province of San Antonio belonged to the Viña Garcés Silva and Casa Marín wineries. Thanks to the work of these wineries, the province began to produce wines from the Syrah and Pinot Gris varieties, made in a climate with a high percentage of humidity. This province received the title of designation of origin San Antonio Valley in 2002. Another important date for the wine sector of the province is 1997, the year of the inauguration of a private aqueduct that serves as a water flow to different areas of agricultural production located in the areas of Abarca and Leyda. The scarce rainfall in other areas of the province (city of San Antonio and Cartagena), which barely reaches 250 mm per year, has been softened by the water from the Maipo River, which is essential for the cultivation of fruit trees and vineyards.
WINES AND WINERIES
In addition to the aforementioned wineries, Garcés Silva and Casa Marín, from which the cultivation of varieties such as Syrah originated and developed, the Matetic wine company is equally noteworthy for its use of Merlot and Malbec varieties.
In the Leyda Valley, we find Casa Marín, De Martino and Viña Montes, as well as Viña Leyda, which was established in the valley in 1998. These wineries produce today prestigious wines that enjoy national and international prestige.
POINTS OF INTEREST
The port city of San Antonio is an important tourist centre in the province, which in summer attracts thousands of tourists looking for sports and leisure activities related to the sea. Another city with a greater interest in the province is Cartagena, a municipality that was declared National Heritage Site in 1992. From a cultural point of view, it is important to mention the municipality of El Quisco, where the Nobel Prize winner of Literature, Pablo Neruda, lived for years and where he wrote most of his works. Today, this House Museum is managed by the Foundation that bears the name of the famous Chilean poet.
For those tourists who are fond of sport and recreational boats, it is worth visiting the Algarrobo Yacht Club, located in the municipality bearing the same name, where The Race – 1000 miles, considered one of the most important sport competitions in South America, is held every year in February.
