Lucca / Carrara DOCs
Among the main wine regions to explore near Lucca DOC Montecarlo and Colline Lucchesi. Montecarlo is known for its excellent red and white wines, and Colline Lucchesi offers picturesque vineyards and unique blends.
One of the main DOCs of Lucca is Lucca DOC, which produces a variety of wines, both red and white, with Sangiovese being the dominant red variety. This DOC is recognized for its versatile wines, offering bright acidity and vibrant fruit flavors, often with a good balance between structure and freshness.
Lucca also hosts the Montecarlo DOC, a denomination that produces both reds and whites. Montecarlo Rosso is typically made with a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the whites usually include Trebbiano and Vermentino, offering fresh and aromatic wines that reflect the region's temperate climate. Montecarlo DOC, a small treasure just a few kilometers from Lucca, is famous worldwide for its prized wines and imposing fortress.
Colline Lucchesi DOC, for white and red wines in the Italian region of Tuscany. The area includes the three municipalities of Capannori, Lucca, and Porcari in the province of Lucca. The name means "hills of Lucca". The varieties for white wines are Trebbiano Toscano, blended with Chardonnay, Greco, Grechetto, Malvasía, Sauvignon Blanc, and Vermentino.
The red wine is produced from Sangiovese mixed with Canaiolo Nero, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, and Syrah. Single-variety wines must contain at least 85% of the respective variety, with a maximum of 15% of other permitted varieties.
The white Vin Santo is produced using any of the authorized white varieties in secco and amabile versions, while the rosé Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice is made with any of the authorized red varieties in dolce.
Another important wine denomination in the area is Versilia DOC, which stretches along the coast of Lucca. This region is known for producing fresh and refreshing white wines, often made with varieties such as Trebbiano and Vermentino, ideal for the warm coastal climate.
Terre di Pisa DOC is another important denomination, covering a range of wines produced in the province, where both red and white varieties thrive, with Sangiovese and other native grapes playing a significant role.
In the province of Massa-Carrara, there are five specific denominations. The first is Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC, with wines made from Vermentino, Albarola, and a Malvasia Bianca di Candia, both in sweet and dry versions, while the reds are made from varieties of Barsaglina and Vermentino Nero.
The Colli di Luni DOC, shared with the province of La Spezia, in Liguria, includes the red varieties Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and/or Pollera and/or Ciliegiolo Nero, and the white varieties Vermentino and Trebbiano Toscano.
In the denomination Val di Magra IGT, red and rosé wines are produced with the varieties Pollera Nera, Ciliegiolo, Groppello, Merlot, and white wines with Albarola, Trebbiano, Vermentino, Pollera Bianca.
In addition to these DOCs, the Toscana IGT label is applied to many of the premium wines produced in Lucca. These wines, made with both native and international grape varieties, offer a broader range of styles and are a testament to the creativity and modernity of the winemakers in Lucca. The white varieties are Pollera Bianca, Albarola, Trebbiano, Vermentino, and the red varieties Canaiolo, Sangiovese, Bonamico, Merlot, Vermentino Nero, and Massaretta. The wines from the Costa Toscana IGT denomination are shared with the coastal provinces across the entire region.
