DOCs Açores
The vineyards of the islands can produce red and white wines, as well as fortified wines that have given so much fame to these islands as to Portugal in history. The Denominations of Origin in the Azores are DOC Açores and DOC Pico, its IGP Terras Madeirenses and Açores.
The island of Pico, Graciosa and Biscoitos are in the DOC Açores with white varieties of Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico.
These islands have only 3 exclusive D.O. for white wines and liqueur wines, created in 1994:
- D.O. Graciosa: Wine is produced from Verdelho, Arinto, Terrantez, Boal and Fernão Pires. Fortified and white wines.
- D.O. Biscoitos (Terceira Island): Fortified wine is produced from Arinto, Verdelho and Terrantez vines.
- D.O. Pico the Verdelho wine has gained worldwide fame. Pico wine is mostly white. The authentic and genuine. But there are merlot vineyards on the island that also produce red wine.
For rosé, red and other island wines, the wines must be labelled as IGP Azores.
The cultivation of Verdelho is the mainstay of viticulture in the Azores, although Arinto, Fernão Pires and Terrantez (Folgosão) are also grown on the islands. Winemaking trends lean heavily towards fortified wine styles. With low diurnal temperature variation and equally low seasonal distinctions (January's average maximum of 16°C rises only slightly to 25°C in August), the Azorean climate makes it difficult for wine grapes to reach full phenolic maturity without losing acidity and freshness.
