Basque Country
Wineries of La Rioja are concentrated in the unique area of the Basque Country, on the south of the autonomous community, which corresponds to the province of Álava. The majority of these vineyards are included in the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin (DOCa), where certain municipalities also participate in the DO Cava, while in the provinces of Guipúzcoa and Vizcaya, the coastal areas, the predominant wine is a young, acid white wine called txakoli. It is protected by their respective denominations of origin: Txakoli de Vizcaya, Txakoli de Álava and Txakoli de Guetaria.
The grape varieties currently authorised by the Rioja DOCa Regulations are Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano, Maturana Tinta and Garnacha for reds, and Viura, Malvasía, Garnacha Blanca, Tempranillo Blanco, Maturana Blanca, Torrontés, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo for whites. Txakoli wines are made mainly from white Ondarrabi Zuri and Ondarrabi Zuri Zerratia grapes, and red Ondarrabi Beltza grapes. There is also an important production of cider in Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa.
