Jaén
Jaén is situated in the south of Spain in the northeast of Andalusia. Although it was constituted a province in the 19th century, it is one of the ¨four kingdoms¨ of the autonomy. It is bordered by Córdoba, Ciudad Real, Albacete and Granada. It is the quintessential land of olive oil and its olive groves make up two thirds of cultivation.
HISTORY OF WINE
Since roman times, Andalusia has cultivated vines, cereals and olives. Jaén province is especially highlighted in the above mentioned, although there are also wineries. Since the Castillian occupation, consumption and wine production grew and as had happened in other parts of Spain, it was thanks to the boost of religious and military associations. The Orders of Santiago, Calatrava and San Juan worked on large extensions of hectares of vineyard.
The most valued wines in Jaén in the 15th century were torrontés, albillo and aloque; which had their own Designations of Origin until the end of the 18th century. The oidium and phylloxea plagues finished off many plantations in the 19th century, turning the farmers to olive cultivation. Because of this, Jaén is the last Andalusian province on vineyard surface area but they continue to produce quality wines in Bailén, Lopera, Pozo Alcón and Torreperogil.
WINES AND WINERIES
Because of the supremacy of olive cultivation, Jaén is one of the few Spanish provinces which do not currently have a Designation of Origin for wines, along with Granada and Almeria. Some of the most important wineries in the area are Bodegas Marcelino Serrano, Bodegas Valle Bravo, Bodegas Campoameno and Bodegas Herruzo. Rimontgó has wineries and olive groves for sale in Jaén.
POINTS OF INTEREST
The many olive trees in Jaén make the oil a great attraction for tourism in the province, so many paths and activities are organized. From a cultural point of view, interesting cities like Úbeda and Baeza make up a monumental Renaissance ensemble recognized by UNESCO. There are also various castles and natural environments of great beauty, from four natural parks to a mountain range full of vegetation and unique animal species.
