San Juan
The province of San Juan is another major wine producer in the Cuyo region. The wineries in San Juan are mostly located on the southern side of the province, characterised, in general terms, by a dry and mild climate with an average altitude of 700 m. This region extends between the Andes and the Pie de Palo Mountain Range, on both sides of the San Juan River, where the Tulum Valley is located, which together with the Ullum and Zonda valleys (to a lesser extent), serve as the framework for the activity of the San Juan wineries. There are higher, and consequently fresher, mountain valleys that exceed the height of 1,000 meters, such as the valleys of Jáchal or Calingasta, where vineyards are also cultivated. In the province of San Juan, the development of the wine industry has made possible to find everything from table wine to quality wine from different grape varieties, liquors and sparkling wines.
HISTORY OF WINE
Most of the wineries in the province of San Juan are located in the valley areas of this Argentine province, which offer the best weather conditions for the cultivation of vineyards. One example is the Tulum Valley, where a large number of wineries are grouped, including well-known companies such as Callia or Augusto Pulenta. At a different altitude than the previous one, we find the cultivation of vines also in the Pedernal Valley at about 1,340 m, where in addition to the Syrah variety, the Malbec is also cultivated. The Syrah from San Juan has similar climatic and soil conditions to the Australian variety, one of the best worldwide examples of Syrah.
The low degree of humidity together with great sun exposure are some of the factors that influence the excellent conditions of these lands for wine production and also an adequate thermal alternation with little presence of hail or winter frosts and sandy-loam soils. The oldest winery in the province of San Juan is Santiago Graffigna, with over 135 years of history.
WINES AND WINERIES
The province of San Juan has more than 264 companies dedicated to the wine business, making this Argentine province the second most important in the country after Mendoza. Among the most outstanding wineries in the province of San Juan are Augusto Pulenta, Finca Las Moras, Santiago Graffigna or Bodegas Callia. Among the different varieties produced in the wineries of San Juan, the most important one is the Syrah, a variety for which the wineries of this Argentine province are strongly committed during the last years with the purpose of raising the quality standards that allow this Argentine wine to be fully competitive in the international market.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Tourism is one of the most promoted leisure sectors in San Juan thanks to the landscape and natural charms of this province. Thus, trekking or mountaineering enthusiasts have two essential destinations in El Mercedario, one of the most impressive in Argentina, and Ischigualasto National Park, which has an important paleontological site of great scientific value. In the last few years, both the government of this province and the wineries themselves are promoting the implementation of different routes within the wine tourism sector.
