DO Campo de Borja
LOCATION AND HISTORY
Situated in the northwest of Zaragoza city, we find Borja, the biggest city in the Designation of OriginCampo de Borja. It is surrounded by more than 7,000 hectares of vineyards. Geographically speaking, this area is a continuation of Navarra, which spreads throughout the south of the river Ebro making its way towards Aragon. Traditionally, the DO Campo de Borja is divided into two sub-zones: Llanos de Plasencia in the south and the riverside of the Huecha river in the north.
SOILS
The vineyards are found in altitudes between 350 and 750 meters, descending from the slopes of the Moncayo Massif in the west to the low hills in the east. The landscape is a sequence of plateaus throughout the valley of the river Ebro. The soil is mostly sandy on limestone, which is why it is stony and well drained. Overall, the altitude and soil are perfect for the production of good quality wines.
CLIMA
Like other winemaking regions in Aragon, Campo de Borja has an extreme continental climate with long, hot summers and low winter temperatures. A cold, dry wind is characteristic of the area, known as the cold north wind. Rainfall is scarce.
TYPE OF GRAPE
The wines of Campo de Borja boast body and depth with clear fruity aromas. The majority of production continues to be with the red grape, growing steadily in the number of vintage and reserva wines, but there are also white wines and rosés. The main varieties of grape are Garnacha Tinta, Tempranillo, Syrah, Mazuela, Cabernet and Merlot for red wines; and Macabeo, Moscatel, Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo for white wines.
