Currently there are 4,400 working wineries in Spain and the vineyard extension is of almost a million of hectares destined to the wine production, being the country with the largest vineyard area worldwide.
Wine classification in Spain is made according to European regulations. The agricultural chapter is the responsibility of the European Commission and as such regulates agriculture throughout the EU. According to these European regulations, wines are classified into three categories: Wines with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Vinos de la Tierra (VdIT) and table wines.
With regards to the wines catalogued as Designation of Origin (DO); these are wines which qualities and characteristics are exclusively due to its geographic origin with its inherent human and cultural factors. The 100% of the grapes come from the production area and its elaboration is carried out within the geographic area. These wines have a subdivision depending on the quality:
- Vinos de Pago (VP): native to an estate (a region or rural setting) with particular features that distinguish them from their surroundings.
- Wines with Qualified Designation of Origin (DOC): wines with a Designation of Origin (DO) that have reached high levels of quality over a long period of time and have spent at least 10 years since its recognition as a DO in order to obtain the category of Qualified. In addition, greater control and quality is required.
- Designation of Origin wines (DO): high-quality wines produced in a delimited production area and with an elaboration controlled by the regulations established by a Regulatory Board. Cava is a special designation for sparkly wines, considered a Designation of Origin (DO) whose production area is not unique but includes several regions.
