Pisa
Pisa is a city in the Italian region of Tuscany.
It seems to have been founded by the Ligurians. It was probably later occupied by the Etruscans and the Romans. By the 9th century the city already had great naval power. Allied with Genoa, it expelled the Saracens from Corsica and Sardinia in the 11th century.
Pisa obtained great commercial benefits after the First Crusade, and its growing economic power brought it into conflict with other important cities of the Italian peninsula, such as Genoa and Venice. Together with these and Amalfi, it was one of the four Italian Maritime Republics (Repubbliche Marinare). The 12th and early 13th centuries were its era of splendour. In the 14th century Pisa lost its overseas possessions and in 1406 the city itself was sold to Florence.
The port of Pisa was located in the present-day city of Livorno, which as it grew gained its own identity becoming the main port of Tuscany.
HISTORY OF WINE
Around the 8th century BC, Rome was home to an ancient civilization (known as the Etruscans) who had mineral resources, and were one of the main trading powers of the entire region. The Etruscans were known to be skilled grape growers and wine makers, and were the first to introduce viticulture to the region. The Etruscans produced large quantities of wine, becoming an important element of the local economy.
In the 15th and 16th centuries, wine production expanded even further, thanks to the introduction of new cultivation techniques; it began to gain fame throughout Europe, and became a highly valued item in international markets.
WINES AND WINERIES
The province of Pisa, located in the heart of Tuscany, also boasts notable DOC and DOCG wines, with a focus on high-quality production and local grape varieties.
Among the DOCs, the most prominent is Chianti DOCG, which extends into parts of the province of Pisa, with Sangiovese as the primary grape. Terre di Pisa DOC is another significant designation, encompassing a range of wines produced within the province, where both red and white varieties thrive, with Sangiovese and other native grapes playing an important role.
Regarding DOCGs, while Pisa does not have specific DOCG wines of its own, it is closely linked to the Chianti Classico DOCG, as part of the greater Chianti area, and the Vin Santo del Chianti DOCG, which also extends into parts of Pisa, renowned for its sweet passito wines.
Pisa’s wine production benefits from a diverse climate and soil types, making it a growing and exciting region for both traditional and innovative winemaking.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Among the most important monuments of the city is —in the famous Piazza dei Miracoli— the cathedral, built in marble between 1064 and 1118, in the Pisan Romanesque style, with its bronze portal by Bonnano Pisano and the pulpit by Giovanni Pisano. Next to the cathedral is the striking 12th-century leaning tower, 58.36 metres high, which suffered its characteristic tilt immediately after its construction began.
The Baptistery of St. John, a religious building located in Campo dei Miracoli, is one of the largest baptisteries in Italy known for its Romanesque architecture and famous bronze panels depicting biblical scenes; the Camposanto Monumentale, is a historic cemetery renowned for its frescoes and sculptures as well as its Gothic architecture.
Pisa was the birthplace of Galileo Galieli.
In the province's picturesque villages are San Miniato, perched on three small hills, known above all for its white truffles. Pontedera is the birthplace of the iconic Vespa scooter and the home of its historic Piaggio factory and museum. The colourful art town of Peccioli was named the most beautiful village (borgo) in Italy.
Some more of the many places worth visiting include the stunning architectural setting of the Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico, hometown of tenor Andrea Bocelli; the Roman Theatre and Baths of Volterra; and the sandy beaches of Marina di Pisa.
